Another super nice day

Having gotten a peak at the weather I was champing at the bit all day for this ride. Not because I anticipated a super fast time or anything, but just because it was so nice with just a light breeze. Evidently a number of other riders thought the same thing about the weather. Good to see folks out. I wasn’t sure how my legs would feel after the morning P90X routine, but they held up fairly well throughout the ride. No records set, but it still came out as a solid and enjoyable ride.

P90X-82 Legs Back AbX

Starting out my left knee felt… not right… Perhaps my last two longer bike rides had stressed it some.?   After a couple different exercise sets though it felt OK.  I was still pretty careful with it.  You can’t accomplish squat if you blow yourself up.  (Ahem… Cools, Garvey, BEST!!!)   I did increase the pullups by 2 for each set and by 4 on the last set.   Syndie says I can’t say "AbX went well".   Well it didn’t go well, it went Great!!!   30 across the board and 80 weighted mason twists.   I was feeling pretty good and well, it is the last time in this round of P90X, so… well, I thought I’d just keep going.   Worked out pretty decent.  :D   It was kind of funny to see Syndie glued to the screen on the other end because I started before her and finished after her and she did 60!!!   Me being silly does not detract from the fact she did 60!!!   A new record for her and kicked Tony and his cronies butts!!!   :D   Yup, I brag on my workout partner because I know that without her accountability and fun (we do have some kind of sleep deprived stupid funny moments from time to time) I would have NOT completed this as successfully as I did.   Thanks Syndie!!!   :D

Sweet day for a ride…

…for the most part. I know I shouldn’t bitch about the wind. So I won’t… I’ll bitch about the complete inaccuracy of what is "reported" for the wind. k.. nuff about that. The temps were wonderful sky blue with nice little fluffy clouds. I kept a pretty decent push on, but had it in my head to do more than the standard 20 miles so I marshaled my energy a little. I don’t like to bonk. I passed several riders going the other way during my ride. Evidently a lot of folks decided to take advantage of the beautiful temps. When I got back to the sign in point at least twelve people had signed in during the time I’d been riding. I had to stop for a few seconds mid ride to adjust my derailleur cable. Ever since my in ride fix last week its been shifting oddly, so I had to tweak it a little. It still isn’t just right so I’ll be putting it up on the rack again to tweak it some more. Definitely burned a couple calories during this ride and I’m having a run in with a rotisserie chicken even as I type this. There might be enough left for my wife to have a couple nibbles when she gets home. :D

P90X-80 Back Biceps AbX

Had to rely on the warmup to get me awake enough to get into the workout.   Tried to take advantage of the negatives for some of the routines vs just let the weight back down with little resistance.  An effective way to multiply the training benefit without having to increase the weight or reps.   Definitely felt the burn.  Syndie tells me I can no longer say "AbX went well".   She says I have to brag.  30 of everything along with 60 weighted masons.   Also pretty smoked at the end of those too.  :)

Columbus day cruise

Somehow I talked myself into believing that my legs were feeling well enough for me to go a few more miles than I have been of late.    I got through the ride OK, but I’m pretty spent.   I guess P90X took more out of me than I thought it would.

P90X-78 Chest Shoulder Tris AbX

Didn’t do especially great in the strength work today… at least not the pushup portion.   Still felt smoked in the end.   AbX went well.

Well this was different

Glad to get on this one, but wasn’t sure how much I’d be able to put into it. Strove to maintain a good push, but didn’t tear into anything while just riding the hills to get up them. It makes for a pretty short report.

That changed with the last hill. With about 100 yds ± I went to shift and… rattle clunk grind… My derailleur hanger broke in two. Yup… left my derailleur just hanging there in the chain. I figure most folks would be SOL and would be making phone calls for a pick-up.  I was a little annoyed, but oddly enough, when I bought my cheap assed $500 bike, it came with a spare hanger.

They aren’t very big, and I figured, they didn’t send it for no reason, so, for the last five years I’ve been carrying it around in my tool pouch with my patch kit.  Knowing I had it, I just walked the bike up to the top of the hill where there was a sign whose design had a place that would let me just hang the bike and work on it.   It did take a few minutes, and I got plenty greasy, but in the end I was fully functional again.  Evidently when it broke it got hung in the spokes a little as my back tire is no longer 100% true.   No problem, I’ll tweak that out this weekend.    After that I rode back down to where the failure occurred, took the Garmin off pause and proceeded to finish my ride.

About two miles out from the end I passed a few soldiers running the other way.  Then close to a mile later I saw another soldier running.  She was a tad heavy on the bottom end, but she was still moving along.  I debated turning and offering some water but didn’t.   As I came around to my finish point I saw the group of soldiers I had passed earlier.   (I just rode a big loop in reverse of the direction they were going).   I told them about the straggler and advised they go check on her, but they seemed kind of puzzled about what to do.

Slightly annoyed (You send a runner back to check on her morons).  I rode the direction that she would be coming from.   If I can help it DO NOT go this way.  The hills SUCK.  You ride down into this hole and then are obligated to climb back out.  It’s too close to the start to begin a ride on and more than I ever care to deal with at the end of a ride.   I got nearly to the top of the other hill when I met up with the runner.  I asked her if she was OK, and offered her my water bottle to douse or take a swig off of if she wanted.  She declined and informed me she was OK, it was just that she had just had a baby and was still working to get back in shape.   lol… what a trooper.  (Reminds me of Syndie).    I let her know I had told the group, she thanked me and I headed back to my truck.

P90X-75 Legs Back AbX

Unexpectedly ready for this today.  Not my favorite routine, but went after it pretty hard anyway.  From what I could tell Syndie did too.   Felt good enough to up the count on most of the pullup sets which isn’t something I normally have the urge to do.   AbX… Went well… 30 of everything (including scissors) and 60 weighted masons.

P90X-73 Back n Biceps

Went after this pretty good today, even the pullups which I am not especially fond of doing, but they do the job, so I do ‘em.  Only upped weight in a couple items but kept the same reps for everything I did.  AbX was another success.

An admonishment to anyone doing the P90X routine, and more than likely other routines as well, but I can’t speak to those.   Do NOT give up at the end of the second month.   Keep driving on and keep going after it.   It has been my experience and I believe Syndie will agree, that most of the gains acquired by this program come in the last four weeks.   Stuff I was whining about when I started (just read some of the old posts) are quite doable now and I even "bring it" on some of them.  I also HIGHLY recommend getting a partner or two to work with in some way.   Syndie and I have done this thing using iPhone’s and Facetime.   I am certain I would have skipped, or sloughed off, and not tried nearly as hard as I did if I hadn’t had a dedicated workout partner.   It helped tremendously.  Thank you Syndie.

Right down the middle.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to do out there today. I tried to precondition my thinking to be that I would not kill myself on this ride. The temp was awesome @ 82°, but the wind was ornery and gusty, and I just wasn’t into guessing how to attack it for max success. I also left the hills alone today. Just rode to get up them respectably and very happy I made that choice. In the end this ride came out far better than it should have. This is much like a route I’ve done several times before, except I added a 1.75 mile leg to this one. This ride is very comparable to the best I’ve done for the basic route, yet most all the segments are right down the middle for averages. I’ll take it.
