January? Really?

The historical average is 10° cooler than what it was today. I suppose we’ve had weather like this in January before, but I just didn’t really notice as much because I wasn’t outside doing things like biking in it.  I’ll take it, but 67° seems pretty crazy.   It was a slower paced ride today as I rode with Kevin and Eric.  Kevin was on his fixie (Single gear, if the bike is moving the pedals are moving.  Crazy hard.)  I focused on hitting the hills pretty hard, and then would loop back to pick the guys up and then we’d just cruise to the next hill.   It made for a nice ride as far as I was concerned.  Nice weather, I wasn’t all bent on killing it the whole way and even chit chatted a bit.  A sure sign I was taking it easy.   Nice ride.

Short ride, ugly weather.

I had been watching the forecast all week and today was supposed to be nice.   I didn’t even check this morning when I got up and loaded my gear.   I finally got a clue that it wasn’t going to be nice when my co-worker / co-rider Eric asks me, "Well, do you think the rain is going to hold off long enough for us to ride?"  IF I had planned to ride at my normal time it would still be close, but as it was I was looking to start later so Ken could join as well.   So, I watch the radar and forecasts just hoping it would hold off long enough to ride.   Eric wasn’t able to stay for the later ride and called it a day.   I stuck around only to have Ken bail on me.   I was pretty sure I was going to get wet, but to mitigate just how wet I rode a convoluted route that gave me a number of bail out points if it really started coming down.   At about 10 miles it was sprinkling pretty good, by 13 miles it was flat raining.  No more loop-de-loops to get more miles.   It was just a squeak under 16 miles by the time I got back to my truck, and I was plenty damp.  At 63° it wasn’t especially toasty being wet.   Despite the shorter distance it was still a good workout and feet per mile the climbing was right on par with my usual stuff minus some of the steeper grades.

Dragging

So, you know those days when you are dragging at work, but once you get into your workout you start feeling a lot better? Yeah, this was not one of those days for me. I felt like crud the whole ride and had no zip whatsoever. Just bleh….  I have felt better after 50 mile rides than I did after today.   Probably coming down with something… oh boy… can’t wait.

Slight extention

Rode the first 10 miles with Eric who turned around before committing to going down into the hole.  At that point I had averaged about 17.4 (this included loop backs to police up Eric a few times.)   I had planned to ride our backside loop, but a mile and a half after he had turned back I came upon a closed gate. This of course mandated I ride down into the hole again and climb back out of it again. I can’t help but ride hills, but this one is just about my least favorite. Doesn’t matter which way you are going, they have segments of 12% grade either way.   Just have to chalk it up as good training I guess.

Outer loop group

Still crazy warm today. 69° No complaints. Group ride, with a number of loop backs and pauses for the slower folks.  Cranked hard on the hills and got some good workouts there for sure.  Felt good.

Light cruise with the fellas

First ride of the year.   It was pretty laid back except for about 1/2 a mile which is where the high HR came from, but you can see by the average HR it really wasn’t a high pressure ride.  Quite a few loopbacks to pick up slower riders which was usually right after climbing one of the many hills we have.   It really worked well for me and it being a nice 66° out just made for a good ride.

Rounding out the year

The wind was a bit blustery today but it was warm enough being in the mid 60s so I took the opportunity to roll out one last ride for 2011.   Nothing special, just one of my old standard rides.   Not much in the way of wildlife today except for a couple of squirrels and a few tweety birds.  Not much in the way of performance either except that I got the miles in.  I hope to hear good reports on goals achieved and expect I’ll be seeing a few more lists come out too.   Hope everyone has a great new year!

Stuck with the plan

Some days the weather conditions are just marginal. I watch the lying ba… err… the weather web sites, to see what they are predicting. Of course I go outside to confirm things as best I can and then make a pre ride plan. Once in a while I can actually stick with it and today was one of those days. Pretty glad I did. With the cooler temp and breeze I don’t feel I shorted myself by not doing the extra 10 mile loop and near 20 is still a good distance to ride. Fortunately there wasn’t too much shade, but when there was it was chilly.

This cannont be December…

… OK, it can be, but the historical average is mid 50s not mid 70s like it was this afternoon. Looking at the splits it is very close to last Friday’s ride and in similar conditions.   One day I will get smart about how I do my rides.   I will tell you I’m not turning blue because I’m not holding my breath waiting for that to be an imminent event.  I know me.

More crazy warm December temps

Another super nice day, especially considering it is December. Even down here in Georgia one should only expect it to be in the mid 50s, so this is definitely bonus weather today.   Rode solo for the most part today.  Caught up with Art (an older gentleman in his 70s) and rode along with him for a mile or so and chatted.  In reality it was a needed break as I, true to form, had bucked the wind harder than I should have chasing him down.  He said something about him being so slow and not to let him keep me from going on.  I’m thinking… sure, that’s why I almost had a cardiac trying to catch you… because you’re slow… riiiight.  (Note avg HR for that 5 mile segment 174)   Finally I did move on and told him to have a good ride.  I also told him that if he saw me piled up on the side of the road twitching to just keep going.  I much rather just die outside in the sunshine than behind my desk agonizing over some POS software that by design will never work as advertised.  Even though I pressed it pretty well it took the next 19 miles to gain a little over 1/2 mph on the average.   This wasn’t pushing it to the max, but not slacking either.  In the end there was no question in my mind I’d been on a bike ride.  Good stuff.
