Avoiding hills.

I absolutely didn’t feel like tackling hills this morning, so I altered my route. Even though it ended up being shorter there was still more than enough climbing for me. The pace I managed was kind of low budget considering I did about 400 ft less climbing. It should have been better.  Just validates I made the right choice.   Very humid, but still a nice morning for a ride.

Not the expected

When I loaded up my bike for a ride I really wasn’t "feeling it" as far as pushing it. Work has been all in turmoil this week and it has been depressing. It will all work out, but it has sort of sucked the life out of me.    So, for the ride I figured I would just take the ride and try not to chase the clock.   For the first half of the ride that worked fairly well.   I actually stopped for a minute or two at the far end turn around because of traffic.  Who would think there could be so much out in the middle of nowhere?   Checking my watch I saw I wasn’t that far off from last weeks pace and that was wind assisted.   This week the wind was light and coming from the other way.  When I started back up I was still not trying to "kill it", but three miles later I looked and saw I had upped my average to almost 19 mph.   That was the end of the "not clock chasing" and I gave it a decent effort for the rest of the ride.  In the end a 19.2 avg seemed pretty good for a "I’m not feeling it" day.

I’m a slow learner

Still test riding my friends GIANT OCR C3 and I still don’t have the shifting down very well, and the ride still kicked my a$$. On a different note. I met the garrison Sergeant Major this morning in the parking lot. Nice guy. We didn’t ride together as he was on a time crunch and took a different shorter route. Still, it’s cool that the post has a bicycle advocate in a key position. I had noticed a few weeks ago that there were some new signs (for different routes) with mile markings and arrows pointing the way etc. I thought they were for ruck marches or some such. Turns out they were for cyclists… part of his doing. Nice for folks who aren’t that familiar with the roads. I thought it was pretty cool. I’ll probably run across him again some day.

Still “Test Riding”

Had an outbound wind to fight on this one and by mile 8 was pretty sure I had dumped too much energy fighting it. I’m still not used to the bike I am "test riding". The difference in gear ratios and the shifting of them is just not what I’m used to and it messes with me quite a bit. It seemed to me that I worked way too hard for what I got. The temps were great though.

A cruise at the lake.

i wasn’t really feeling like the hills of Ft Gordon today and really wanted a change of pace, so, I went out to the lake. Nice temps with a pretty stiff breeze which was nice on the outbound but it beat the crap out of me on the return trip. So far it seems my back held up.

Test ride of me

My first ride since tweaking out my back two weekends ago. Not a very long ride, and I didn’t try to kill it anywhere in the ride. Things seemed to hold together fairly well, which is encouraging.

Hot and chasing faster riders.

Hot today. Pushing 90° and sunny. No overcast to reduce the cook factor. Ran across a guy (Chad) who I crossed paths wit on Strava. We rolled out together, but I knew I was in for an ass whipping. The rest of the ride was spent with him somewhere well in front of me. Except when he got a flat. I stopped while he changed out his tube and then off we went again. Just as he was finishing getting his tire back on another rider went zooming by. I started out. I was gaining no ground. Eventually Chad caught up, went by, and then I was working to keep him in sight. All this and I got no PRs… lol… It is actually because the whole ride was more balanced due too, thankfully, a lack of much wind.   The other guy had taken a different turn than we did at one point and came rolling in after us.  I expect I’ll run into Chad once in a while, or at least cross paths.

Extended the weekend

Spent Memorial Day weekend at my brothers helping him catch up on some projects that he can no longer do for himself. He worked me to a frazzle. Drove the six hours back yesterday. I had already planned on taking today off from work with every intention of getting a ride in.   The ride kicked my butt.   Especially on the return trip back into a NE wind.  Overall I’m happy with the ride though.

Hard ride to end a crappy day

Work was a cluster today.   I’ll spare the details.   The ride was rough too.  Pretty warm, so I was dumping water over myself to keep cooler.   I did not care to have a repeat of feeling nauseous.   I don’t ride this counter clockwise route often because the real work comes in the last 6 miles.   More climbing in those six miles than the 17 miles previous.   Although my average doesn’t seem to change a great deal going one way or the other I usually prefer to front load the work.   The average "should be" a little better than it reads.   I hit a bump and my front headlight came off it’s clip mount.  $100+ light, so I wasn’t about to just leave it.  So I went from a nice 20mph clip to a dead stop and then walked back to get the light.   I was pretty spent by this point, so It took me 1/4 of  a mile to get back up to speed.   The worst part of riding where I do, is not matter which direction I go, is that I’m climbing out of a hole at the finish.

Sunny Sunday Chase

I was "supposed to" take it easy today. I was "going to" take it easy today. When I got to the sign in point I ran into a guy from work who was riding a combination of the Ft Gordon loops until he got 100 miles out of of it. HOLY CRAP! Not for me. He pulled out for another loop about 5 minutes before me. I caught him 12 miles later where I had a 19.5 avg. We rode together back to the sign in point… about 10 more miles. The wind was not our friend and that average took it in the nose. Apart from the wind it was a great day for a ride.
